Teachers:

This lesson was developed by Aaron Garrett and Wanetta Eisert as an interdisciplinary project for eighth grade social studies and laguage arts students.

The lesson is about the Second Continental Congress and the delegates involved in the creation and passing of the Declaration of Independence.

Materials Needed:

The only thing you will need besides access to the Internet and computer lab will be a copy of the musical "1776".

Process:

We do this project after an introduction to the causes of the revoution and many of the people involved. Before beginning the film, I have kids draw names out of a box to determine which delegate they will be. I narrow the list of delegates to those that are most prominent in the film.

After viewing the film and a couple of days of research, I have the students complete a rough draft. The reason for this is that I like to conduct a peer read-around to help edit and give students ideas to improve their final copies.

The rubric is very simple and can be adapted to meet your needs in your classroom.
