Algebraic Syntax in AppletQuiz
The AppletQuiz applet uses a standard "computer language" algebraic
syntax. Some things to remember:
- Spaces are not significant:
- "3+2" and "3 + 2" and "3 + 2" all evaluate to 5.
- Multiplication cannot be "implied" - the "*" symbol must be
used:
- 3X causes an error message
- 3*X means "3 times X"
- Multiplications and divisions are performed before additions
and subtractions:
- You can control the order of evaluation in an expression using
parentheses:
- (2 + 3)*4 = 20 (not 14)
- Parentheses may be nested. Evaluation of the inner-most
expression is performed first:
- Mathematical functions are generally written as
"name(argument)" with the argument or arguments enclosed in
parentheses:
