Tables with Automatic Increment

Often it is convenient to have the TI-89 generate a table of values for a function (or functions) using a constant increment between each x value. To do this:

First, you have to be sure that the function is defined and checked (F4 key key on the Y= screen). The table that you generate will contain values for all checked functions.

Press diamond keyF4 key(Tbl Setup) to bring up the Table Setup screen. Here, you enter the starting x-value for the table and the increment between values.

If Independent is AUTO, Graph <--> Table has the following effect:

  • OFF - generates values for the starting value and increment you select
  • ON - generates values that match the values graphed on the current graph.

Once the table is initialized, press green diamond key F5 key(Table) to view the table. You can use the arrow keys to scroll through the table, and F2 key to change the starting value or increment.

Entering X-Values Manually

 

Sometimes it is most convenient to enter the x-values that you want manually. The function shown at right is from Example 1 on p. 48 of the Larsen Text. You want to find y values for selected x values near x = 0. (You could also use the "|" operator on the home screen to generate values of this function, also, but table form is often convenient, and the table can calculate for several functions at once.)

On the Table Setup screen, set Independent to "2: ASK". The starting value and increment here don't matter.

For every x value you enter, the y-value is calculated for each defined-and-checked function.

Oops! Notice that the y-value for x = 0.0001 does not match the value given in the text - the value in the table has been rounded.

To display more digits, pull down the "F1: Tools" menu and select "9: Format".

Use the pull-down menu to select the number of digits that you want.

Here is a more-precise value (using 10 digits).
