Dear Parent/Guardian:
Hello, my name is Jerry Stanbrough, and your son/daughter is a
student in my AP Physics class this year at Batesville High
School.
First of all, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions
about the AP Physics program or BHS, don't hesitate to contact me. I
can be reached at school at (812) 934-4384, ext. 12609. You can email
me at jstanbrough@batesville.k12.in.us.
Also, I don't mind phone calls at home from parents or students - my
home phone number is in the phone book.
I invite you to look over the introductory handouts that your
son/daughter received today in AP Physics class, particularly the
course introduction, the
"How to Succeed.." handout, and the
list of materials and
supplies.
If you are connected to the Internet, please visit the BHS AP
Physics Homepage at www.batesville.k12.in.us/physics/index.html.
There, you will find;
- additional information about the AP Physics
- a class schedule of assignments, labs, and tests
- class notes
- handouts
- answers/solutions to selected homework questions and
problems
- interactive practice quizzes
- links to other AP Physics resources
A couple of points that I want to emphasize:
- Calculators: A graphing
calculator is required for the AP Physics course. Although a
student may use any calculator on the list of approved
calculators, we will be emphasizing the TI-89
calculator in class this year. This is an extremely powerful
machine, but it is also quite expensive. Your son/daughter may
rent a TI-89 calculator from the high school for the year, for a
very reasonable fee - contact Ms. Raver in the main office.
- Help: Students find AP Physics
difficult. At some point, just about every student will have
difficulties. As teachers and parents, we need to walk a fine line
- we want students to be independent and self-sufficient, but we
have to be sure that they don't fall behind. If you feel that your
son/daughter is having difficulties with their class work,
encourage them to contact me for extra help, or you can contact me
directly.
Also, in past years I have held AP Physicss help sessions from 7:40 AM to 8:00 AM two or three days per week. I have found that this can be a great help for students, and I will be starting help sessions in a couple of weeks. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend if at all possible.
- Grades: Starting this year you will be able to access detailed information about your child's current grades online. Information on how to do this will be forthcoming from the BHS administration. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grade don't hesitate to contact me at jstanbrough@batesville.k12.in.us.
Thank you,
Jerry Stanbrough
